SEQ: Balancing housing and koalas

The Institute recently held a workshop with Department of Environment and Science and the Planning Group of Queensland Treasury regarding assessment of development under the new South East Queensland Koala Conservation Strategy and revised koala regulations.

With the substantial increased area of identified koala habitat a significant number of applications are currently being processed by SARA and the department. It appears progress is slow with the stringent controls being cautiously applied by the government. Of particular concern is that accepted, site responsive and practical solutions are not being considered, with some members reporting time delays and long RFIs. The location of new mapping, including many isolated patches not coordinated with structure plans that dealt with environmental matters, is adding to issues.

The workshop showed a creditable endeavour by the government to seek to work through issues to achieve instructive case studies for the benefit of industry. The Institute will progress case studies with DES and the Planning Group to seek practical outcomes for development and koala conservation and sustainability.
