Better delegation and fast track assessment

Redland City Council requested feedback from the Institute regarding the City Planning and Assessment Group assessment of development applications. The Institute supports council’s openness to provide feedback on their operations.

The Institute consulted members that are delivering residential communities in Redland. Through this process, two consistent themes emerged.

Members conveyed that too many applications are experiencing delays and trivial code assessable applications are being called to council. Members also requested a more rigorous and robust approach from council to ensure affordability was not compromised in the region.

The fast tracking of simple applications was recommended to relieve pressure on council officers and to ease the flow of development applications. A fast track process would free council resources to turn their attention to larger and more complex applications, which would benefit both council and the industry.

The feedback provided will inform council’s business planning for the next financial year with the aim of improving the operation and efficiency of the assessment process in council.
