Branch members have raised serious concern over council’s change positioning on carparking. Under the proposed requirements, council would require carparking to be located underground (basement) or at grade with generous deep planting requirements.

Our submission has highlighted that the cost of providing basement car parking can be $50,000 per individual car space, approximately $15,000 more than podium carparking. This is based on information from publications by Rider Levett Bucknall.

The Institute appreciates and understands the challenges presented in ensuring there is sufficient supply of private carparking whilst seeking to provide an attractive built form. However, the Institute is of the view that podiums with carparking need not detract from the cityscape, pedestrian and public spaces, or the Gold Coast’s iconic character.

We are awaiting council’s response on alternative solutions to address carparking solutions. Any questions, please contact Policy Executive, Robert Tily (rtily@udiaqld.com.au) on (o7) 3229 1589.
